Eggs are a superfood, and every part of it can be utilized for your benefit. The shell is an excellent source of calcium, as almost 40% of the eggshell consists of calcium. Eggshell calcium is as bio-available as purified food grade calcium carbonate, just without all the side effects (meaning it’s very bio-available and safe). Eggshells are one of the highest natural sources of elemental calcium with it’s own essential trace minerals and transport proteins for maximum absorption and bio-availability. Eggshells are also a great source of strontium and have shown to have anti-rachitic properties and is very important for bone metabolism. Other beneficial minerals are also present in eggshells and as a bonus, eggshells contain very low to no amounts of toxins and are very safe for human consumption.

1g of egg shell contains 400mg of calcium. The recommended daily intake of calcium is 1g. So in order to do that, one needs to consume about 2,5g of eggshell and one eggshell weighs about 2,5g.

One eggshell a day is enough for your daily requirements for calcium. But don’t worry, you don’t need to chew it to get it’s benefits (but you always can if you want to).

  1. Collect all the eggshells from the eggs that you use. Wash the outer shell clean and remove all gooey-ness from the inside. You can leave the non-gooey white layer as that’s an excellent source of collagen and amino acids arginine and glycine.
  2. Boil it in a pot for 10 minutes
  3. Bake it in the oven for about 10 minutes
  4. Throw it all in a blender and blend for about 2-5 minutes until everything is a fine powder
  5. Transfer to a storage jar or container

It’s as simple as that. Now you can use the powder in recipes just as you like, or swallow it in the powder form. I’ve done that, but it’s like swallowing a teaspoon of sand. Not so nice, but not too bad. It doesn’t really taste like anything. Or you can get empty capsules from a health shop near you and fill it up with the eggshell powder.

Depending on the size of you capsules, 2,5g capsules will be 100% of your daily calcium requirement. And as a side bonus, it contains no calories. Now you don’t have to worry about consuming lots of dairy or green leafy veggies to consume all your calcium, just make your own very simple calcium supplement.

I believe that consuming whole foods for their nutrients are much better than taking a synthetic supplement. Also aim for nutrients extracted from foods that still contain all the enzymes this is very important for it’s absorption and utilization in the body.

The same goes for eggshell calcium. It’s superior to other supplements as it works as a whole in improving your health. Keep in mind, vitamin D helps with the absorption and utilization of calcium. Vitamin K2 is also needed to transport the calcium to the right places so that calcification of tissue doesn’t occur. Also, be sure to keep in mind that calcium and magnesium levels always need to be balanced in the body.
